85th Vessel Scheduled to Depart James River Reserve Fleet


The Kittiwake is scheduled to depart the James River Reserve Fleet Wednesday, February 18, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. It will be towed to Dominion Marine in Norfolk, VA, where it will be cleaned in preparation for sinking as an artificial reef in the Cayman Islands. The projected reefing date off Grand Cayman Island is July 4, 2010.

Kittiwake is a former Navy submarine rescue ship constructed in 1945. Preparation for reefing will take several months.

The Maritime Administration keeps ships at three National Defense Reserve Fleet sites: James River in Virginia, Beaumont in Texas, and Suisun Bay in California.
