International Activities

This section provides information about international activities on a country by country basis, as well as an overall perspective from the IMO GloBallast site.  The GloBallast site provides IMO information as well as the total international picture.

 

GloBallast – The Global Ballast Water Management program is sponsored by IMO and provides excellent information for developing countries.  This is the premiere site for international ballast water information. Make sure to go to the Newsletter.

 

 

 

Marine Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) – All of the work at IMO on Ballast Water Management is carried out by the Ballast Water Working Group of the MEPC.  In this section, reports of meetings of the working group, products of the Working Group, and other papers developed for MEPC on ballast water will be provided.

 

 

 

Australia – The Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry service of Australia recently announced that mandatory ballast water requirements will become effective July 1, 2001. There are a series of documents and forms that have been provided by the Australian Department of  Agriculture, Fisheries, and Forestry, including:

 

·         Ballast Water Management Options

·         Ballast Water Regulation Impact Statement

·         Guide for Uptake/Discharge Log

·         Guide for Ballast Water Treatment/Exchange Log

 

 

 

 

Canada – Guidelines were recently published by Transport Canada that dealt with ballast water discharge in Canadian waters.  This section will update all Canadian activities in ballast water management.

 

 

 

Norway – The Norwegian Research Council has published a Ballast Water Transfer Atlas based on approaches using biogeography and risk assessment in order to prevent the transfer of harmful aquatic species.  Future efforts in Norway will be highlighted in this section.
