Haiti Relief

The Maritime Administration (MARAD) and the U.S. maritime industry have mobilized to bring aid to the people of Haiti.  Within hours of the January 12, 2010, earthquake, MARAD officials began working actively with other federal agencies and front-line commanders to support them with maritime/logistical capabilities and resources. After canvassing the U.S. flag commercial fleet, MARAD reported on more than 20 ships available for work to support Haiti operations. Also, upon request from the U.S. Department of Defense, MARAD mobilized five government-controlled ships:  These ships are being crewed with civilian U.S. merchant mariners.

Status Update: The Cape May departed Norfolk for Haiti on January 26; Cornhusker State and Huakai departed January 27. All three ships have arrived in the area and are currently in service. Petersburg and Alakai have been deactivated.   For more information on the MARAD ships activated for Haiti relief and reconstruction, please click on their names below.  Click here for photos of the ships.
