MARAD SHIP EMPIRE STATE ARRIVES IN NEW ORLEANS Hurricane Recovery Moves into Next Phase The Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) mobilized the Empire State to New Orleans “to help the port complete its recovery,” Deputy Administrator John Jamian announced today. The Empire State will provide housing and meals for Port of New Orleans workers, medical and security personnel and local emergency responders. The Empire State replaces the Wright, Sirius and State of Maine. The Empire State, Sirius and State of Maine are maritime school training ships that have been providing support for hurricane relief and recovery efforts as part of MARAD’s National Defense Reserve Fleet. The State of Maine will depart New Orleans on November 16 and the Sirius is scheduled to leave for Galveston on November 23. The Wright, part of the Ready Reserve Force, a fleet of cargo ships usually used by the Armed Forces to support military movements, will leave New Orleans November 21 for Lake Charles, LA, to provide housing and meals to port workers and McNeese State University students. “The officers and crews of our MARAD ships continue to perform at a very high level,” said Deputy Maritime Administrator John Jamian. “They have been masterful in situations completely unfamiliar to them, providing food and clean shelter for hundreds of people every day.” Before being dispatched to New Orleans, the Empire State spent two months assisting in emergency efforts to repair the ConocoPhillips Alliance Refinery, one of the country’s largest. The Empire State served more than 60,000 meals and provided more than 15,000 overnight accommodations while in Belle Chase, LA. Two New Orleans based US –flag cruise ships, the American Queen and the Mississippi Queen, are now onsite to provide berthing and subsistence support for long term restoration efforts.
