Hull Structure: Changes in vessel designs require new or adapted hull designs that ensure safe maneuvering and strength.

Hydrodynamics: Innovation provides measures to address vessel wakes on shore and in water, jet and propeller wash, and pressure fields of vessels ranging from deep-draft containerships and oil tankers to fast ferries.

Ship Design: Cargo and passenger loads, ports, and vessel functions are varied in size and makeup.   R&D programs determine which vessel designs work most efficiently and effectively for the different sectors of the maritime transportation system.

Ships' Machinery: Innovation leads to simplifying the use and maintenance of the increasingly complex machinery onboard ships.

Ship Production:  Economic vitality can be accomplished through quality management and design of manufacturing processes.
