INNOVATION
NEEDS:
Building an Innovative Workforce
Educated and talented workers are the lifeblood of the marine
enterprise and a requirement for innovation. Current and future shortages demand
action and innovative approaches.
A
research component is integral to effective education necessary to assure that the future
maritime workforce will have the advanced skills, leadership abilities, and an innovative
mindset to develop new, effective ways to meet challenges. Engaging the youth of today in
maritime affairs and developing solid educational programs through research components
leading to future thinking and developments is absolutely critical to the successful
future of U.S. maritime industries. |
Major R&D Thrust
Areas
- Labor Recruitment
and Retention
The maritime industry is already experiencing shortages of mariners and
industry programs are actively engaged in developing ways to improve recruitment and
retention practices. The supply of talented naval architects and marine engineers
to develop and build innovative designs is also dwindling with efforts needed to
strengthen the supply of talented youth to the field. Some of the major supporting
research related activities are highlighted here:
- University-Based Research
Research programs at Universities supporting the maritime industry are
essential to engaging academia to apply new approaches to addressing the problems of the
industry. Such efforts both support and stimulate professors to engage in innovative
work in needed areas but also provide activities involving students that lead to a focus
on innovation and openness to improving systems.
