NEEDS:
Promising Technologies
Advances in theory and technologies often take place in the
background yet can happen quickly if advances and implementation needs are examined in
promising areas.
Updates
in technology tools and methods are taking place in the maritime industry. Human safety
and national security have been at the forefront of these applications. |
Major
R&D Thrust Areas
- Clean Technologies
Hybrid vessels, fuel cells, electric operating systems, and prototypes that
embody clean and cost-effective functions are being researched. There is a need for
dissemination to policy makers and other interested stakeholders of success stories
highlighting the status of clean technologies.
- Cargo, Personnel, and Infrastructure
Tracking
As cargo and personnel move from shipyard to port to transport vessels and
vehicles, they are vulnerable to interference and tampering. Commercial strategic
ports are at considerable exposure to international crime and terrorism through security
vulnerabilities of foreign seaports and carriers with which they conduct trade. Security
readiness depends on technologies to track and determine the status of cargo, personnel,
and infrastructure.
