Western Region

Role and Purpose

The Western Region office, located in San Francisco, California, accomplishes all MARAD programs for this region consistent with directions from headquarters. The region covers the states of Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Montana, Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. It also includes the National Defense Reserve Fleet (NDRF) site at Suisun Bay, California.

Major Activities

The Region Director works directly for the Maritime Administrator and is responsible for the following activities:

Provides financial support services for programs within the regional area;

Custody, preservation, maintenance and operation of ships, including those in the Ready Reserve Force, at the Suisun Bay NDRF site and elsewhere in the region;

Supporting or conducting supplementary training for licensed and unlicensed personnel in the maritime industries; and

Participating in regional port and intermodal transportation development activities, including environmental activities.
