Maritime Energy
Technologies
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
MISSION
As the principal advocate within Government for U.S. maritime interests, MARAD has
initiated an Energy Technologies Program. The Program seeks to:
Investigate and demonstrate the potential for new
technologies and fuels to improve marine power plant efficiency and to reduce air
emissions.
Provide guidance and information on maritime energy and emissions regulatory and policy
issues.
Reduce dependence on foreign oil and protect the human
and natural environment directly in contact with marine activity.
The Program actively seeks partnership with industry, other Government agencies, and
academia.
PROGRAM OBJECTIVES
Research, develop, and disseminate information on energy and emissions technology and
technology applications. Encourage the use of promising technology in the marine industry
by making reliable information available and through demonstration projects and outreach.
Research, develop, and disseminate information on comparative transportation systems.
Identify areas where marine transportation systems have potential to become part of an
integrated transportation system. Identify energy and emissions requirements that marine
transportation must meet to function in these integrated systems.
Research, develop, and disseminate information on energy and emissions policy and
regulation including incentive programs and emissions trading.
Provide guidance on reasonable and rational maritime emissions policy and regulation
development at the domestic and at international levels.
