NewsB06-008 Press Book On April 30, 2006 the Maritime Administration appointed Deepak Varshney, to be the director of its Central Region in New Orleans, La. Mr. Varshney has been the interim director since the retirement of John Carnes. Mr. Varshney joined the MARAD team as the Ship Operations and Maintenance Officer (SOMO) in New Orleans, La, in 1992. As the SOMO, he was responsible for the Central Region’s Ready Reserve Fleet activities, including ship repair, maintenance, activation and deactivation and disposal operations in New Orleans and Port Arthur, Texas offices and the Region’s Ready Reserve Fleet (RRF) in Beaumont.
